The Chicken Says Goodbye to a Surfing Legend

Andy Irons 1978 - 2010

32 year old ASP World Championship Tour surfing heavyweight Andy Irons was found dead in his Dallas hotel room while en-route to his home in Kauai, Hawaii today. The 3x consecutive world champion withdrew from last weekends Rip Curl Search in Puerto Rico due to succumbing to Dengue Fever, a febrile disease transmitted by mosquitoes, usually in the tropics, and was heading home to recover. Irons was sitting in 16th position on the WCT and had a win in the Billabong Pro at infamous Tahitian brake, Teahupoo.

Unfortunately as we all know the media love to report unconfirmed information and love even more to jump to the conclusion of a drug overdose if a celebrity dies in a hotel room, claiming that Andy's death may have been due to a Methadone overdose. Show some respect to a legend who was loved by all and an inspiration to so many.

You are an idol, inspiration and hero to many including myself. R.I.P Andy, you will missed dearly and always be remembered as a legend. Now you are a God.

Out of Hibernation!

The weather is starting too warm up and The Chicken has finally come out of a long hibernation and has awoken to a new universe of new music that needs too be shared with the world! So it is time too get the thinking headphones back on and the blogging fingers warmed up.

A man who is getting a lot of attention recently is Atlanta based DJ/producer, Le Castle Vania. In 2006 Le Castle Vania also know as Dylan Eiland spread his wings and left his home town of Georgia and has been touring the globe ever since, playing alongside some of the best DJs and producers the electronic music scene has ever seen, such as MSTRKRFT, Busy P, Soulwax, Steve Aoki, Crystal Castles, Uffie & Feadz, Soulwax, Kavinski and French royalty in the form of Justice.

Le Castle Vania has recently released a remixes EP of his newest track Nobody Gets Out Alive. The EP features remixes from Noisia, Rynecologist, Rrrump and Dubstep kings 12th Planet & Flinch. Each of the remixes are diverse in their own way but don't stray too far from the original. The NOBODY GETS OUT ALIVE REMIXES EP is available now through all good online music stores. Here is a little sample of what Le Castle Vania is capable of behind the decks and a couple of my personal favourite Le Castle Vania remixes too tantalize the eardrums. Definitely worth a listen!

Useless Information #2

It would take 11 Empire State Buildings, stacked one on top of the other, to measure the Gulf of Mexico at its deepest point.

Amazing but useless.

Here are a few tracks that have really caught my eye this week. There is a bit of every thing, from Down-Tempo to Dubstep to Tech to Filth so enjoy.

Broke N DJs

During my aimless wondering through Melbourne I was lucky enough to meet 3 guys who  are quite talented behind a couple of cdj1000's and a djm800 mixer. If you are familiar with the Melbourne club scene you may have heard their 'off-chops' style of mixing every Thursday for Hangtime at Eurotrash   Their names are Aaron, Greg & Rob or Sir SweatZ, M.t-ed & Whitewash and together they are Broke N Dj's. Their influences include Gus Da Hoodrat, Jamie Doom, A-Trak, Boys Noize, Justice, Bloody Beetroots, Tiga, Jack Beats, Kid Kaio, Dubbel Dutch, Chocolate Puma, Zombie Disco Squad, Crookers, Renaissance Man, Solo, Mowgli, Drop the Lime, just to name a few.

Here are a couple of mixes to check out and make sure if you are in Melbourne and looking for somewhere to go on a Thursday night to head to Eurotrash for Hangtime and check them out. Also, don't forget to tell Pixel Chicken what you think by commenting below.

The Chicken Hits Melbourne

Pixel Chicken has arrived in the music and arts capital of Australia, Melbourne to cause some trouble. I was welcomed by a Krispy Kreme at the airport and was pleasantly surprised to find our very our beloved Farmers Union Iced Coffee in the Highpoint Safeway.

A lot of strange things have been happening lately. First there it a twister in Lennox Head, northern NSW and then an outbreak of Legionnaires disease in Melbourne and a gun wielding maniac in the UK. But what I witnessed this morning tops the lot. I went to the local Aldi supermarket at the fresh time of 8.50am for a winter snow gear sale only to find a line of customers waiting to scrum their way into the tiny supermarket to get their hands on a bargain. The customers were already on their marks and ready to go when the clock struck 9 and not a second after the doors opened everyone was trying to rush through the door. It was just like the post Christmas sales. After a few minutes shop attendants had to replenish stocks and not long after that things began to die down. Anyway enough of my rambling... Here is some music.

This is a new mixtape from Elkaywhy that I think all you fans of hard banging beats will appreciate. There's a bit of Electro, Tech, Fidget, Dubstep, Concrete and Garage, so there is something in there to suit all different ear drums.

Don't forget to comment below and tell Pixel Chicken what you think and get onto out Facebook page to get all the latest updates.

Bonerjams 3000

The good thing about my job is that I get to listen to more tracks and mixtapes than I can poke a stick at. Some are good, some are average and some are just plain shit. I was sent a mixtape from a guy from Norlunga named Benjamin Parton and it falls under none of the above categories, it's great! The tracklist makes me weak at the knees and it has clever use of samples throughout the mix.

OHMY! there's a new kid on the block!

I know what you are thinking . . . Here comes ANOTHER aspiring DJ/producer! I won’t deny that there is no shortage of Adelaidians competing for residency within the nightclub scene, but few of them come with the raw talent that Jase ‘OhMy’ Gulliver possesses.

When asked to best describe this 19 year olds style, one would use the words ‘heavy electro infused with hints of other genres such as garage, and Dutch inspired leads’. Jase idolises Kissy Sell Out and finds inspiration in artists such as Foamo, Herve, Mighty Fools, Dave Spoon and Mowgli.

While he hasn’t got a residency anywhere just yet, be prepared to hear big things from OhMy. He’s already performed at established clubs such as Mojo West and Marble Bar and possibilities of regular appearances at other renowned Adelaide nightclubs are on the cards.

In the meantime, Jase has been focusing on the production side of things. His first production, ‘All The Girls’, was completed in just a day and is a good indicator of just how successful this guy is going to be.

In conclusion, I say ‘watch this space’ when it comes to Jase ‘OhMy’ Gulliver, and remember that you read about him first on Pixel Chicken!

Check out ‘All The Girls’ and his May 2010 Mixtape on his SoundCloud site:

Sinead on Kingdom

For those of us who enjoy a blend of heavy bass-lines, R&B and garage-style tunes; Kingdom certainly hits the spot. After recently experiencing one of this Brooklyn bred producer’s sets at Lost and Found at Electric Circus last Friday night, I have become a massive fan.

Despite the small crowd and the change of usual venue from downstairs at Electric Circus to the more intimate setting of Limbo, there was no lack of energy or atmosphere. Lost and Found resident DJ, James ‘Brainss’ Marshall, pulled out all the stops in his set due largely to the fact that Kingdom is one of his favourite producers. Being a lover of all things dubstep, I was particularly impressed when Brainss finished his set with some funky dub and Kingdom kept the vibe going when it came his time to jump on the decks.

In smooth transition Kingdom progressed from the filthier to the groovier. His set was infused with the perfect blend of hip hop and garage to create a set with depth that made you want to crypt walk and get as low to the ground as possible. Highlights of the set included Kingdom’s own productions, Mind Reader and You Don’t Know Michelle.

I eagerly await Kingdom’s next performance in Adelaide and can only hope South Australian’s catch on to how truly brilliant this guy is.

Tiga Is Going Live

One of We Love Sounds biggest acts is going live. Tiga told In The Mix last week that he will be bringing a live element to his sets at this years We Love Sounds festivals using his Australian fans as lab rats for his new experimental ambitions. He says the reason behind his 'Turbo Planet Live Show' is because he feels he need to lift his game and keep up with producers who are no longer focusing on making records but touring. Tiga goes on to tell In The Mix, “Nobody is really confident about making money on records anymore, that part of the industry is either dead or dying. So that leaves people with a lot more urgency to tour, and that means there is more people touring and it’s a more competitive market place, so everyone has to offer a little bit more. That and there’s always a natural desire to try something new, especially if you’ve been doing this for as long as I have.”

So does this answer the question, where does the dance music industry go from here? The Bloody Beetroots are doing it with their 'Death Crew 77', 2ManyDjs are doing it, The Proxy and Kissy Sell Out are doing it, even our local heros Def Starr are planning to go live. I guess time will only tell. All I know for sure is that this years We Love Sounds festival is going to be something special.

An Addict Full Of Nonsense

Just some tracks from my personal collection that I thought needed to be shared. The First track is by Italian born producer Daniele Papini. If there is ever a gap in a DJ set that needs to be filled by bassline filth then Daniele Papini's 'Church of Nonsense' is the track to fill it. It has a minimal techno rift and a filtered bassline which keeps twisting up as it gets more intense.

Mightyfools, A Dutch duo (Andy Samin and Jelle Keizer) who me randomly in a club have since then achieved many great things. They are known for their highly energetic DJ sets and Banging originals. 'Addict' is a great track which has a House inspired build-up with a hard Fidget style drop.

No One Can Stop Mr. Domino

Hey everybody, I have some new stuff here from an Adelaide due who are tearing it up at the moment. Hank & OSK joined forces in early 2009 and their style combines booty bouncing basslines, with hip-hop, tech disco, hard electro, dub step and whatever else they can find in their oversized CD wallets.

Here are a couple of mixtapes from Hank to check out.

And a couple of Hank & OSK edits.

Kartel Kids

You may not have heard of the Kartel Kids before and thats understandable because these guys have jumped onto the scene out of nowhere. But don't let that put you off them. Unlike most of the noob DJ's flooding Adelaide playing tracks that have been thrashed to shit on commercial radio, this duo (Carlos and Matt) actually know what they are doing. They have already had a set at Stereosonic Adelaide 09, claim residency at Lost & Found Fridays at Electric Circus and were even finalists in the Adelaide Fringe Spin DJ competition. Don't believe me? Then check out a few of their mixes and see what you think.

And a few of their personal favourites for you to enjoy...

Looking into the Future

Adelaide must have done something right on Adelaide Cup day to keep the rain gods happy because unlike most of the other Future Music Festivals, no acts were canceled due to rain, in fact the only bit of rain that we saw came at about 9pm and was very light. As expected, The Prodigy played phenomenally and blew the crowd away. A combination of great lighting and visual effects, along will an exceptional performance by them made their set one that will be remembered. Other acts that stood out were Boys Noize who also played a mind blowing set at Electric Circus last Thursday night for the POWER! tour also Franz Ferdinand, Does It Offend You, Yeah!, Ajax, Bag Raiders (who added more of a live element to their set which was a nice touch) and Def Starr who just made it look too easy.

By Tim.

Here are a few tracks to keep you happy.

Chicken vs Ajax

Its one thing to write about a genius, its another to get to interview him. Ajax has taken the time from his extremely busy schedule to have a chat to the chicken. He has played 4 club sets alongside acts like Miami Horror and Boys Noize and 1 festival set all in the last week. So the chicken is very grateful and honored to get this interview. This is how it went.

Chicken - "Adrian, thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions for the Chicken, i can understand that you are a very busy man. Firstly, who are your influences and who is the biggest act you have played alongside?"

Adrian - "I would have to say dj Craze as the biggest influence... Biggest act I have actually played with would be either Beastie boys, Snoop Dog or Daft punk. No i didn't talk to snoop but in true gangsta style i did get mugged after the gig!"

Chicken - "Disco is fast becoming the latest craze. Where can you see the dance music scene in Australia going from there?"

Adrian - "Hmmmm it seem s to be split into a few camps now, disco being one , dutch being another...and the beetroots/ boyz noize euro tech thing being the third. Of course there is always the mainstream house electro but i guess I don't really fit into any of these. I guess I am horn/midget house, and what I call ravehall, or ragga tech, fidget and that dutch baltimore tribal crossover sound. I guess I am drawn to this because of the obvious hip hop influences and its always surprising, which i diggity!"

Chicken - "Before you got into mixing, what did you want to do with your life?"

Adrian - "I was a lecturer at UNSW in the art campus studying my MFA by research. I was also a bartender at a lesbian bar."

Chicken - "How did you come up with the name 'Sweat It Out'?"

Adrian - "Hmmm I dunno but it sucks... Would have been better if it was called 'White Panther' but then we would have sounded like wankers!"

Chicken - "Finally, what was it about our local heroes Junior and Xavier (Loot & Plunder) that made you want them to be a part of your label?"

Adrian - Because they are not wankers. I also heard them play one of the best sets I have ever heard. "Hurry up on your production you wankers!"

Chicken - "Thank you Adrian, can’t wait to have you back for Future Music Festival 2010 hitting Adelaide on the 8th of March."

Well there you have it bloggers and blogettes Mr Adrian Thomas AKA Ajax himself on the Chicken. Stay tuned because there is plenty more to come.

Chicken Sweats It Out

For those of you who weren't lucky enough to be at Electric Circus in little old Adelaide last Saturday night then you missed quite a show. The master of mash-ups and re-edits himself Mr Adrian (Ajax A.K.A Dance Legend) Thomas smashed, cut, chopped, mixed and mashed his way through a cranking set supported by local legends Loot & Plunder (Recently signed to Sweat It Out, Ajax's record label) and Def Starr (who slipped perfectly into their brand new Arcade residency). Party-goers went hard until the wee hours of the morning as Ajax showed everyone why he is among the best DJs Australia has to offer, if not the world, and my personal favourite.

For those of you who have not heard the magical talent of this mixing freak of nature, hit the link below for his mixtape. Enjoy!

There's Something About Def Starr

They have done it again! This troublesome trio (Brad, Johnny and Marco) have achieved plenty over the last 12 months. From their humble beginning as a duo under the name Touché playing at The Sandbar on Henley Square on a quiet Sunday night to their brand new Arcade residency at Electric Circus and their Fences remix which hit number 1 on Hype Machine AND placed 27th on the Hype Machine top 100 of 09, Def Starr have really put their name on the board. Sounds pretty impressive to me.

Now they are back again with a Daft Punk version which is sure to make you knees tremble.
